Hindutva and Hinduism are 2 different words. Hindutva is a purely political term. Hinduism is the ritualistic religion people follow. One may not follow hinduism and still be a hindutva wadi.
It would be important to understand that the word hindutva was coined by an atheist patriot called Savarkar. It speaks about putting Bharat Mata before any religion or ritual or holy book.

This appears meaningless debate for me.
1. Linguistic roots of the four words Hindu, Hindustan, Hindutva and Hinduism must be appreciated first. These words have undergone semantic changes over the years and acquired meanings with political overtones. They even now mean different things to different people. It assumes an altogether different meaning when we talk of the leftist newspaper “The Hindu”. We cannot wish away the relationships.
2. Hindu is the Persian sound for the river Sindhu – It is a geographical name with no religious significance. The people of Sindhu-desa are Hindus, their country is Hindustan, (sare jahan se accha according to Md Iqbal), their life style was Hinduism and their basic nature was Hindutva – characterized by the so-called idol worship and polytheism of many of them in the eyes of others
3. Atheism (Charvaka), Jainism, and Buddhism are philosophies developed here and strictly not organized religions like the Abrahamic ones. Organized religions which entered the country are Islam and Christianity and Hindus are those who do not belong to those to religions of THE BOOK., who trace their origin to Adam and Abraham.
4. Bharata Mata is of course inspired by Durga Mata in the song of Bankim Chandra, Mother India and goddess mother India are Hindu concepts. Even earth is Bhudevi, Mt. Arunachala, Mt. Kailasa or Siva icons, The river Ganga is also Mother.
5. Vedic rituals have given place to Puranic pujas, temples according to Agamas have the latter democratized worship places where an individual prays to his personal God along with others (unlike congregational worship)
6. All Indians can use the words even if one becomes an adopted son of Abraham.
7. Hinduism of all shades and flavours is the characteristic religion shared by all who say they are Hindus. Saavarkar and Vivekananda may be treated as two Hindus concerned about Hindus and Gandhi and Nehru are Hindu leaders who concerned themselves more about others but they were never accepted as their leaders.
