A Very
Brief Write-up On Satavahanas
https://ramamohanraocheruku.blogspot.com/2022/10/a-very-brief-write-up-on-satavahanas.html
Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE to 220 AD) kings have ruled for
almost 400 years giving stability to ancient India by decisively stopping Greek
invasions into Indian Mainland. They not only tried their level best but also
succeeded to a maximum extant to keep the concept of 'Akhanda Bharata' (of
their Mauryan overlords).
They didn't just ruled Telugu lands but have ruled aa very vast
empire. They held entire Deccan region (along with Eastern & Western Coasts)
as part of their core kingdom and at times conquered beyond Vindhyas and entire
south of Vindhyas.
The '*Nasika Prasasti*' inscription of emperor 'Gautamiputra
Satakarni' clearly mentions that
Satavahanas during time of GPS made great conquests (from their
mainland of Andhraka-Asmaka-Mulaka) kingdoms as far in Northwestern India
Kukura (Rajputana), Saurashtra (Gujarat-Kutch), Akara-Avanti (eastern-western
Malwa including Ujjain), central indian kingdoms like Anupa (Narmada valley)
and Vidarbha-Berar and western regions like Aparanta (northern Konkan with
capital of Sopara (present Nalasopora near Thane-Kalyan) and south western
regions V(B)anavasi (chutes kingdom) and Kadamaba kingdom (northern Karnataka).
In the same inscription they also describe conquerred land between various
Hill-Mountains like Vindhyas, Pariyatra (eastern Vindhyas between
Ganga-Yamuna), Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri (Kanheri), Sahyadri (MH), Malaya (TN-KL
border), Mahendragiri (Tirunelveli) and Sreshtagiri and Chakora parvata (in
AP).
In order to administer their vast empire, they stuck to Prakrit
language majorly in their inscriptions - as it was the ‘lingua franca' of most
part of peninsular Indian mainland in the ancient times after the end of
‘Mauryan empire'.
The scholors and Historians stated the administrative language
of the Satavahanas to be Prakrit. The inscriptions by this dynasty found at
various places are in both the Prakrit language and the Brahmi script. However
we can presume Satavahana's have used the Telugu in its vowel ending prevalent in
their bilingual coins.
In fact we should be indebted to Mr. Balakrishna illustrious Telegu
Actor who who dug history and manifested Goutami Putra Satakarni to the present
day Telugu subjects of both the states.
Swasti.
